Time to Shine are running ‘Let’s Connect’, a free drop-in event for people aged 50+ to get practical help and guidance about using the internet and technology such as smart phones, tablets and laptops.
While more older people are accessing the internet than ever before, two-thirds of people aged over 75 and three out of ten aged 65 to 74 do not use the internet.
Recent research carried out by the Centre for Ageing Better and digital charity Good Things Foundation, shows that while some people are happy and able to access services offline or through family and friends, others will increasingly struggle to access essential services and miss out on online help and information as society becomes ‘digital by default’.
It’s increasingly important for older people to have the digital access, skills and confidence they need to live an included and independent life, enabling them to keep in contact with loved ones, make savings by shopping online and pursue hobbies.
It is with these things in mind that our Age Friendly Steering group of older people (many of whom are digitally savvy themselves) suggested we hold an event during the 2019 Leeds Digital Festival in May.
The event, which will be the first the annual festival has held with a focus on older people, aims to increase digital inclusion. It is also hoped that it will raise the profile of older people using technology – that older people can and do go online, can learn new skills later in life with appropriate support, and have much to contribute to the digital revolution.
‘Let’s Connect’ will take place on Wednesday 1st May at Leeds Central Library, and will be a ‘drop in’ opportunity for older people to come along, get help with any technology/internet related queries from a team of digital champions, some of whom will be older people themselves.
We’re organising the event in partnership with Leeds Libraries 100% Digital Team, and other local services who offer support to older people to get online, such as Age UK Leeds.
People will also be able to try out different types of technology, socialise with others over refreshments, and find out about ongoing services and support available in the city.
